Know, Like Trust - Where Real Business Comes From

Know, Like Trust - Where Real Business Comes From In the recruitment marketplace, little is as valuable as the word of mouth referral. That wonderful moment when the phone rings and the person on the other end says something like “so and so mentioned I should call you”. There really isn’t anything nicer. And where does this come from? It is most certainly not just dumb luck. It comes from doing a lot of things right. From doing great work, from having a service that people want to talk about. It comes from being different, and it comes from looking after your clients, before, during and after service delivery. The power of word of mouth In the days of our grandparents, businesses lived or died by word of mouth. Today with the advent of the internet and fancy marketing systems and practices, it is very easy to get lost in the noise. The reality is that nothing has really changed. Sure we have Twitter and Facebook etc to pass on our message, but these just amplify the sound. As Gary Vaynerchuk so eloquently puts it “social media is word of mouth on steroids”. Regardless, people still listen to people that they trust, and their buying behaviour is altered accordingly. If someone you trust tells you that a restaurant is good, you might try it. If they tell you its bad, you definitely won’t. Recruitment is exactly the same. Its all about who you trust, and who they trust. Doing real business Real business is done between two people. Its happens when those two people move from know to like, and then onto trust. Its done at a point where each wants to do business with the other. This is human nature. If given a choice, we will choose to work with people we like. Just as we choose to socialise with people we like, we choose to do business the same way. The importance of small talk But how do we get there? How do we decide we like each other? The answer is simple: we talk. We chat, we communicate, we listen, we respond. We like people who are like us, or like or dislike the same things that we do. This is why people who join sports and social clubs often form such great friendships. They start with the thing that they have in common, whatever that might be, and then they move on. To get to like, small talk is vital. Small talk gets us to the things we have in common, it starts a conversation that can move towards like Learning to crawl before you can run We all know that before we can provide a solution, we need to understand the problem, but in a marketing/networking context this simple rule seems easily forgotten. If you are meeting people and just selling at them, invariably you will lose out. I see this so often at networking events. People standing around and telling everyone they meet what they do, and what they can do for you. If you are doing this, the chances are that people will walk away. The sad reality is that they will not work with you even if they have a need for your service. And, they will not tell people about you. They can’t do, because they probably didn’t listen to you in the first place. Start at like Next time you are faced with opportunity to meet a new business contact remember to connect with them. Get from know to like, and start build towards trust. If they like you, the chances are that at some future point, they will buy from you. How to Land Your First Guest Post Opportunity - Classy Career Girl

How to Land Your First Guest Post Opportunity How do you get that lovely featured in section on your new website or blog? You start reaching out to other websites and offering your very best content to them. It may seem funny. Why would you write your very best content for other peoples websites? Because this is the best way to quickly  get your name and your brand in front of eyes that are excited to meet you. You have one chance to make a great impression. Give it your best. This has been my strategy for the last 6 years and it works. I spend hours making sure that any articles I submit  around the web  are perfect. Why? Because I know that many of the sites I submit my articles to are  going to get a ton of visibility and bring lots of traffic back to my site for years. I also know that many of those websites  have relationships with other top websites where they submit their content to such as Forbes and Mashable..  (That is my big secret to being featured in Forbes and Mashable). Its not that hard or difficult. You just have to start spreading your best content around and putting yourself out there even if it is scary. Why Guest Blog? The answer is simpleâ€"to get visibility, receive more web traffic and develop relationships. How to Land Your First Guest Post Opportunity I have been on both sides of the guest post situation. I have written guest articles for over 100 online sites and I have also accepted guest articles over the last 6 years for Classy Career Girl. I am picky. I have seen some of the best content and some of the worst pitches and content.  Here are my best tips for you to get your next guest post opportunity. Step 1: Make a list of all the blogs that your ideal clients are reading. This is key. Dont just start submitting articles to websites you love to read. That might not be where your target market is hanging out. The goal here is traffic, visibility and sales. Remember how much time you are going to spend creating this epic piece of content? HOURS! So, lets make sure there is a result that will come from it. [If you are reading this, you might like to write an article for Classy Career Girl. Here are our guest post guidelines.] Step 2: Create a list of guest post topics and ideas. It’s important to make sure that you don’t send the same post around  because  most sites will want unique content. Make sure you keep track of titles of posts and to whom you send the articles. Never send out an article that has already been posted elsewhere unless they have told you that is ok and desired. Also, be very careful about syndicating your own content. That is when your content is copied exactly onto someone elses site with your permission.  It might be great in the beginning to expand your reach but know the details and make sure you stop it when your website starts to grow so they dont own your content. Step 3: Start emailing and pitching! Almost every site has a contact section which makes this step super easy. It’s also amazing all of the people and contacts you can find on Twitter too. Don’t forget social media! Tweet: “I have a GREAT post idea for your site. Can I get an email to send it to?” Here’s a sample email you can send to pitch your topics. Hi Danielle, I wanted to reach out because I would love to write a career article for (name of site). Here are some ideas: 1) How to change careers without starting over financially 2) How to know if it is time for a career change 3) Networking tips for introverts 4) How a Networking Challenge Changed My Career (I met with 4 people I didn’t know and 4 people I did know for an entire year) I can have you these articles by next week or I am happy to write about another topic you need at the moment. Just let me know! NOTE: If you don’t hear back, don’t worry. You tried! As your authority and expertise grows, you can try again in the future. The more sites you email, the better your chances for multiple yesses! It only takes one great post to drive a ton of traffic back your way! Step 4: Create amazing content Once you get a yes back, then you can start writing. Make sure you carefully craft your bio for your guest post. This is one of the most important parts of the article. I always recommend linking the article back to your free lead magnet (ex: PDF, cheat sheet, checklist or Ebook) so people can learn more about you and get on your email list quickly. Often you also can include links to your lead magnet within the article too. Example of bio link on guest article: Classy Career Girl, a blog written by Anna Runyan, helps women find careers they love and start businesses they love in 90 days or less. Click here  to download her free plan: 90 Days To An Awesome Career Good luck and we cant wait to see your great guest post around the web!

Dont over plan your career - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Don’t “over plan” your career - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Patricia Sellers, Executive editor at Fortune magazine has spent the past thirty years at Fortune studying the careers of successful people.  She said, the most successful of those interviewed over the past 30 years at Fortune had no clue what they wanted to do when they were in high school or even in college. Sellers says, Always consider how you can contribute to the bigger whole â€" and don’t be afraid to stumble. I wrote a 1995 cover story called “So you fail, so what!” Today, recovering from failure is a badge of honor that bosses want to see in people they hire”. Bo Burlingham, the Editor-at â€"Large for Inc. Magazine’s career path is an example.   Bo’s unconventional career path is what led him to success and happiness.   He had no career plan and his ascent to his current position was more or less as he said “an accident.”  Bo made the switch from a writer for a left-wing newspaper to a writer for a business publication at Fidelity for more job security, training on business concepts, and opportunities for career advancement.   There he was able to broaden his skills and acquire new knowledge of the business world that ultimately led to a better job as a writer for Inc. Magazine.  As soon as he arrived at Inc. he knew that he had made the right decision: He realized that “the media caricatures of people in business were wrong.” Bo was energized working with journalists he called “visionaries and dreamers.” Stay focused on these ideas: Seek real world experiences (over prestigious name firms) to learn new skills Adapt to new and difficult challenges Jump at chances to assume more responsibility Ditch preconceived notions of what you’re looking for so you don’t miss out on a potentially better opportunity when it comes your way Challenge yourself and your beliefs Develop your positive character traits Identify problems in society that bother you and try to be a part of the solution Pursue an industry that intrigues you and that’s growing in an area where you want to live Maintain your connections with family and friends Find time for small kindnesses and for laughter While you’re building a career, remember not to miss out on life’s deepest pleasures. Debut finds 84% of students have university nightmares

Debut finds 84% of students have university nightmares Find yourself dreaming about deadlines at night? Waking up in a cold sweat after a nightmare about exams? Debut’s research has found that you’re not alone, as 84% of students claim to have university-related dreams or nightmares. With exams just around the corner, we decided to conduct some research into students’ sleeping habits and how these might be affecting your performance. The results? The stress of university and the pressure to succeed, as well as student lifestyle habits, mean that students aren’t getting the sleep they need. We busted some sleeping myths, and spoke to Channel 4’s resident sleep expert, leading sleep physiologist and owner of the Sleepyhead Clinic, Stephanie Romiszewski, to get some top tips on how you can ensure you catch those all-important zzz’s. Sweet dreams Two years after graduating, I still get the occasional dream about approaching deadlines or exam revision, but it turns out that university stress encroaches on the majority of students’ slumber. 84% of students admitted they have stress or university-related nightmares, and almost half of these said nightmares were recurring The top five most common nightmares were related to: Exams Failing exams / courses / uni People and relationships Health (teeth and hair falling out / not being able to breathe) Debt Relatable? Of course it’s difficult to control what you dream about, but dreams are a sign of a disturbed night. Stephanie explains: “Dreaming is normal, however if you can recall details of a dream â€" whether bad or good â€" it means your sleep has been disrupted.” Time for an early night Students tend to fall into one of two categories. Those who sleep all the time, whether that’s through a lecture or during a midday nap, and those who barely sleep at all, staying at the library into the early hours cramming in some revision. In actual fact, it seems that the latter defines students the most: 18% of students admitted they only sleep for 3-5 hours a night! To put that in context, the experts recommended getting between 7-9 hours sleep. This means that 1/5 of students are only getting around 50% of the sleep they’re supposed to. We also discovered that a whopping 74% of students often forfeit sleep in order to fit in extra studying a super unhealthy sleeping habit. But length of sleep is not the only important factor â€" Stephanie says “it’s vital to remember that it’s not just about sleep duration. In fact, sleep quality is far more important! We forget this, and strive for lots of hours in bed, which can lead to so much anxiety that we end up sleeping less!” Sleep myths busted Whether it’s an evening stroll or an Instagram scroll, we all have set routines to help us get a good night’s sleep, but it turns out some are a lot more effective than others. We asked you guys what techniques you use to ensure a good night’s sleep, and got sleep expert Stephanie to tell us whether these are effective tactics or not. While some are a good idea, it turns out others might not be doing much good at all: What they students said they do What the sleep expert advises 1. Using the ‘night shift’ mode on Smartphone to reduce light intake (57%)All types of light reduce our melatonin (sleepy) hormones. Even when a smartphone is set to night shift, the stimulation from the tech is still there, during a time when your body is physiologically trying to wind down. By staying on your phone, or laptop, working or doing very stimulating activities, you are actively fighting that ‘wind down’ process.   2.  Listening to classical / relaxing music (40%)If the music you choose doesn’t increase your heart rate (think exercise playlists), then this is a great way to wind down. Be mindful to set a timer to turn the music off once you have fallen asleep, as it will stop you going into the deep stages of sleep that you so desperately need. 3. Exercise (34%) Exercise is great - not just for sleep, but for anxiety too! It might seem strange to rapidly increase your heart rate to reduce anxiety and promote sleep, but some sweat-producing exercise in the day will do wonders for both. But, try not to exercise just before bed. This will make it more difficult for your body to wind down in the short-term. Try giving yourself a few hours for your body to wind down after exercising, before going to bed. 4. Writing things down to clear head (29%)Try to do this an hour or so before bed so you have time for those thoughts to pop up, and deal with them early. Make a to do list for the next day (a realistic and achievable list so that your body trusts you to follow through with your intentions). It will make you feel happy and content, which helps with sleep! Similarly, ‘getting ready’ for bed just before going to bed is also unhelpful (i.e. getting bed clothes on, changing the sheets, brushing teeth in a well-lit bathroom). Do it an hour or so before bed, then do your fun relaxing ‘me’ time…then once you feel sufficiently sleepy you are all ready to slip into bed! 5. Using mobile apps such as Headspace / Sleepcycle (23%)Apps like Headspace help you relax â€" but they are never going to be as effective as they could be, if you only use them at night. Using meditation or mindfulness apps more frequently during the day can lead to good quality sleep. Using apps as a short-term fix to quickly wind down for sleep isn’t going to help improve your sleep long-term. Try to see these aids as more of a lifestyle change to help you become calmer and relaxed in general, and not just crutches to get you to sleep. Perhaps avoid apps that track your sleep â€" they can make you more anxious if you don’t see the results you want. So if you’re struggling with sleep at university, don’t forget that you’re not alone. The most important thing is to try and find a solution that works for you, so you’re able to get the all the snooze you need to help you reach your full potential. Business Etiquette - How to Make Introductions - Jane Jackson Career

Business Etiquette - How to Make Introductions - Jane Jackson Career Business Etiquette â€" How To Make Introductions         Are you left red-faced when making introductions in a business setting?    You could be forgiven for not following standard etiquette when in comes introducing friends, however, if it affects your reputation and chance of career success, you must know the correct thing to do.Why should it matter? It will boost your confidence if you are able to show respect to those for whom correct protocol matters. How skilled are you at making introductions?  A proper introduction sets the tone for how others will perceive you.  It’s all about first impressions and we all know we only get one chance to make a positive first impression!Have you ever been at a networking event or conference with a colleague who runs into somebody he or she knows and starts chatting away while you stand there feeling like the third wheel?  It’s awful to be left in limbo and its rather rude of your colleague who didnt think to make the introduction. In s uch cases you may just have to bite the bullet and introduce yourself, which is fine, but the exchange would have been much smoother had your colleague made a quick introduction in the first instance.Being introduced invites someone into the conversation and makes him or her feel like part of the group right from the start.   Making an introduction shows you respect your friend, colleague or guest and, as my Chinese mother used to say, Gives them face. Neglecting to make an introduction leaves that person feeling ignored and rather awkward.Making introductions is particularly important in business settings as they give you an aura of being confident, prepared, and in control, establish a rapport of respect and gets relationships off on the right foot.   Do you present the right image?  Do people see a true professional when they meet you at networking events or meetings? Do you appear professional? Whats YOUR Personal Brand? To find out, join my FREE MASTERCLASS on the top 3 Secrets to Personal Branding for Career Success and learn my top 3 tips to build your brand and attract the career opportunities you deserve. Click here to register nowdocument.createElement('video');https://janejacksoncoach.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/3-SECRETS-INSTA-HB.mp4  Making introductions in the past used to be very formal and with a lot of rules to avoid a faux pas, but today, just remembering to make an introduction politely sets you apart from the ignorant.Don’t stress about rigid rules or be too fancy about your introductions.   Keeping introductions simple and respectful goes a long way.  Consider this scenario, you are talking to a female SVP of your company at a business networking event and a male SVP from another company joins you.   As they are both of the same level, whom do you introduce first: man or woman, employee or guest, older or younger, tall or short? If you are unsure, there will be a bit of discomfort in those first few seconds, which won’t boost your ow n self-confidence in the situation.     This may reflect in your facial expression, tone of voice, demeanour and even your posture! Here are some easy to remember guidelines to follow which will help you to feel poised, polished and professional when meeting people and making introductions:Introduce people in business based on rank, not gender or age.In business, the client, guest or visitor outranks the boss or co-worker and should be introduced first.Always smile and maintain eye contact.Shake a woman and man’s hand the same, straight up and down. Extend a good, firm (not painful) handshake to exhibit respect, trust, and acceptance.Keep the forms of address equal to avoid differential treatment or the appearance of preferential treatment.Do not call a person by his or her first name when meeting or being introduced for the first time. Use their title and last name until invited to be on a first-name basis.Never use an honorific such as Ms., Mr., or Dr. to introduce yourself.Demon strate professionalism and credibility by clearly stating your full name.  Helpful examples:Always show respectAlways introduce the man to the woman. I know, women like to be treated as equals, however, much as women don’t like these days to be known as the ‘fairer sex’, it’s still polite and demonstrates a little deference that is always looked upon favourably. What about age differences? Resume Writing Help For SeniorsUsing resume writing help for seniors will save you a lot of time and money. When you are no longer in school or working, finding the right job to suit your interests can be very challenging. Instead of hiring a new employee, many companies choose to outsource their jobs to a new hire. This can result in additional costs for seniors who have not yet built up a steady income stream. However, it is possible to find these positions and obtain employment with senior citizens who have been laid off from their current position. To do this, you will need to first meet up with a company that can help you find work. Once you have located a recruiter who is able to help seniors find work, you will need to begin researching the various job openings. As you search the internet for companies that offer resume writing help for seniors, you will need to make sure that you find a company that has a long history of success in helping older employees to find new jobs. A co mpany that has been in business for several years can give you a good idea of what to expect as you prepare your resume. Not all companies are willing to assist older employees, so keep this in mind as you research the companies that are out there.Once you have found a company that is willing to assist you with preparing your resume, you will need to present yourself properly. Most companies require that you wear business casual attire such as a t-shirt and jeans for your interview. If your clothing is anything less than business casual, you will have to have appropriate attire during your interview.Another thing that you should consider when seeking resume writing help for seniors is the time that you have available for your interview. You should always ensure that you have plenty of time on your hands because if you do not have enough free time, it is unlikely that you will have the time to spend preparing for your interview. If you have a busy schedule and cannot attend an intervi ew without incurring late fees, then you will probably be forced to sit through an interview without much sleep. It is also important to realize that the first impression is the most important part of your resume. Before you even begin to talk about your achievements or skills, you want to make sure that your resume is attractive and easy to read. If it is hard to read, it will be difficult to write and you may not make the grade.Interviewers will ask you a lot of questions during your interview. Remember that you should respond to the questions that they have in a calm manner. This can help you avoid negative responses and allow you to work out the kinks in your resume. All of your answers should be prepared ahead of time and any personal information should be left out.It is true that seniors are much slower than their younger counterparts, but it is possible to obtain employment at any level of a company. With the help of a professional resume writer, you will be able to achieve a better level of success and enjoy a more rewarding career. Take the first step towards a fulfilling career by enlisting the services of a senior resume writer.
